When you take up residency in the UK, you can drive on an international licence or an International Driving Permit (IDP) for one year only, starting the date you arrived with the intention of taken up residency in the UK. Residency is defined as the place where you live due to personal or occupational ties.
After one year, your international licence or IDP is no longer valid for driving in the UK. To continue driving legally, you must have passed the UK practical driving test within this period. Driving beyond this point without passing your test can invalidate insurance and lead to prosecution.

As a new UK resident, you must apply for a UK provisional driving licence before booking a theory test or taking driving lessons.
